Watch How You Tell Your Stressful Story!

When bad things happen to good people (you), there is an irresistible urge to share the load by talking about it.  This can have two good results:

You relieve yourself of some of the pressure by sharing

You may have insights into a problem when talking with someone else.

It feels comforting to rush to friends or loved ones to tell them all the bad things that have been happening to you, but it can backfire.  Along the way, you may mentally rehearse everything you’re going to tell them, making sure not to omit any details.  It can be calming to see the look of sympathy in the eyes of someone else, and to hear their consoling words.

When you tell your story in all its intensity, you are reliving the event.  If it was stressful when it happened, your recounting of the story may bring back the same physical stress.   Even your mental rehearsal may do that.

The fact is, an estimated 10% of our stress is due to what happens to us; the other 90% is due to how we think about what happens to us, or how we habitually react to what happens.  So for one real stressful event, you may experience the same reaction many times.  It’s like getting a lot of bang for your buck, except it’s much less desirable than a buck. Each time you go through your story, you are undermining your physical health and your happiness, too, by putting your body through the same raised heart rate and blood pressure, muscular tension, troubled digestion, and mental confusion.

How can you get the release of telling your troubles to others in a way that is healthy?

First, position yourself as a problem-solver, not a victim

Instead of saying something like,  “Why ME?” or “Things like this always happen to me?”, try something like, “This was a real test of my ingenuity.” Or “Once I calmed down, I figured it out.”

Find some humor in the situation – particularly when you’re in the middle of the situation.  When my garage door froze shut, I cobbled together all the extension cords in the house, plugged my hair dryer into the end, and trudged out through the snow to warm up the lock.  No power!  I had to giggle when I realized that I had to go back in and plug the other end of the cords into an outlet in the house, and I giggled even more when I had to make another trip to push the re-set button.

Which brings me to the next point:

The joke’s on you. It happens to everyone, at one time or another – stress leaves us feeling so confused that we overlook simple details and make obvious mistakes. I like to say that Stress Makes Us Stupid.  It’s not the fickle finger of fate poking us once again; it’s a fairly natural and predictable process – but it can be avoided.

When you find yourself blocked at implementing a simple solution during a stressful period, pause, take a deep breath, and think the whole process through before you make a move.  Don’t rush because you want to the stress to end – it’ll just make it worse.

Determine in advance whether you’re asking for advice or help.

Be careful who you choose as a listener.  Some people just have to jump in and solve your problems. Other people (often, but not always, men), see the disclosure of your feelings as a call for help

Tell your listener what you want.  Say, “I’m not asking for help in finding a solution at this time/ I really just need to get this off my chest right now.”

Express gratitude to your listener for listening to you.

“Whew, it’s great to have a friend like you. Thanks for listening.”

Make it a two-way street

Needless to say, being a good listener who doesn’t make judgments or give unwanted advice when other people tell their stories is a great way to get reciprocity.

When you tell your story the right way, other people will be willing to listen to you again and again rather than avoiding you.  You will emerge feeling stronger and more relaxed.

Regarding that frozen week of minor crises that I mentioned at the start; I figured I must have told my story right when the friend I e-mailed wrote back, saying, “That’s the funniest story I’ve heard all day.”

Three Problems and How to Get Rid of Them

If I asked you this sunny Monday what you consider to be the three top ‘problems’ that people have – what would you come up with?

Whatever you thought of they would all relate back to Fear, Procrastination and Bad Health.

That’s it.

Think about it –

Fear – of not having enough money, of staying in a job you hate, never having the life you want, not being the weight you want, not being able to get the new car this year, having your partner be unfaithful, about your children getting the right education, or mixing with the right people, …

Procrastination –  Wiki definition – procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time. psychologists often cite such behaviour as a mechanism for coping with the anxiety associated with starting or completing any task or decision.   Says it all really doesn’t it?

Bad Health – well fear of bad health, real bad health, worrying about whatever will cause stress which can lead to all sorts of illnesses and dis-ease.  Headaches, insomnia, indigestion, back ache, this ache, that ache,  

So what do we do?

Think about this for a moment.

THE POINT OF POWER IS IN THE PRESENT MOMENT.

What you ‘put out there today’ is your reality.

Yesterday is gone, tomorrow hasn’t arrived – we only have today.

You are your thoughts and thoughts can be changed

You can only change yourself you can’t ‘make’ anybody else change.

And this is the exciting bit – when you change your thoughts and behaviours little miracles start happening in your life and your life starts ‘working’

Relationships improve, health improves, life gets better

It really does

You will be taking action in your life

You will be feeling better about yourself and your world

You’ll be sleeping better because you won’t be worried

You’ll feel happier

If we see it as a struggle, as difficult, if we believe in lack and scarcity, then

that’s what we’ll get – I guarantee it.

If we see life as easy and fun, full of love, great relationships, good health, lots

of people to do business with, it becomes pleasurable.

I can’t emphasise it enough – what we put out there is what we get.

Sometimes it becomes too much to ‘do it on your own’

You need someone in your corner, someone who’s there for you but who will keep you accountable.

Candle Making History From 3000 BC to Colonial Times

Both Ancient Japan and China used candles made out of wax which came from insects and seeds.

And they were used as a source of light until not that long ago in terms of human history on this planet. The American colonies just a little over 200 years ago used candles. Ben Franklin even though he discovered electricity in 1752 used candles to light his way and to read and write with. The colonies used wax obtained from the surface wax of bayberries to make their candles with and it was sweeter smelling and less smoky then the tallow candles they had been using. But if that sounds like a tedious task it was making it slightly impractical so less used then tallow.

Tallow which is made from sheep and cattle fat has been the main ingredient used in candle making for many years. They give off a lot of smoke and smell bad. Sperm whales were cursed with having a high quality wax in their head cavities and blubber becoming the target for whalers starting as far back as a couple hundred years BC by the Chinese. In the 1700s whale hunting had grown substantially. Today it is banned of course to protect the whales form extinction.

Just about the time Mr. Edison discovered the light bulb in 1872 putting and end to the need for candles wouldn’t you know it, that’s when they finally came out with the ideal wax; paraffin. Cars with their need for petroleum products were coming into heavy use. Well when petroleum is purified paraffin is a side product that is produced. Paraffin unlike tallow has no unpleasant odor, in fact it has no odor and is clean burning as well. But again after using candles for thousands of years paraffin, the ideal wax for candles, was discovered just at the very end when candles as a source of light was becoming obsolete.

It wasn’t until shortly after Thomas Edison discovered the light bulb that electric light grew to world wide proportion in the early 1900s which isn’t that long ago, just the blink of an eye in terms of human history. But prior to that light was provided by lamps, torches and candles. Things have changed dramatically since the light bulb was invented compared to before it was invented. Think there’s a connection between the discovery and use of the electric light bulb and the tremendously rapid rate of change since then? Yes there is but I will let your imagination run with that question because this article is about candle making history.

Candle use of course came into being to supply the need to light up the darkness. But today it is more of an ornament, or to give off certain fragrances as with scented candles, or to set a mood. Candles are used for certain ceremonies for symbolic purposes. Christians use them to symbolize the light of Christ. And with the great increase in candle making technology they can be extra ordinarily decorative. Scented candles are even used for aroma therapy which these days is considered big business.

Stress Reduction Techniques: as Practiced by Chip

We asked our dog, Chip to share his stress reduction techniques with everyone, because he never seems to let life’s ups and downs bother him.  Chip is a Bassett Hound who practices relaxing everyday.  He lives with two Great Danes and some humans, but he has figured out how to keep calm even when there is turmoil with mail and package deliveries, visitors invading his household space or a Great Dane puppy pulling his tail.  Although he is short in stature, Chip has devised some helpful stress reduction techniques to rise above it all and enjoy a calm and relaxing life.  Here is his advice:

Alter the situation if you can’t avoid the stress.

1.     Express your feelings instead of bottling them up.  If something or someone is bothering you, communicate your concerns in an open and respectful way.  That may include people who are bothering you as you try to sleep or it may be my brother, Brett, who is a Great Dane puppy who tries to steal my chew-toys.  If you don’t voice your feelings, resentment will build.  A couple of good barking howls usually does the trick.

2.     Be more assertive. Deal with problems head on, doing your best to anticipate and prevent them.  Being a Bassett Hound means that I am low to the ground, and often I get overlooked with the 2 Great Danes stealing the attention.  Also, sometimes the 2-legged folks miss the dinner feeding time, and I have to come and bark to remind them.  Speaking up is important as long as you remain honest with your remarks.

 

Accept the things you can not change.

1.     Don’t try to control the uncontrollable.  Many things in life are beyond our control— particularly the behavior of others.  This is especially true with Great Dane puppies.  Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems.  I just find a quiet place to get away from it all and take a nice long nap.  Stress reduction techniques include knowing when to work with life the way it is, and not always trying to change behaviors or life situations that will never change.  For example, I know that I am short in stature and that will never change, but why stress over this fact?  People will have to love me the way I am.

2.     Learn to forgive.  This is one of the most important stress reduction techniques I use.  Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world and that others make mistakes.  When my long floppy ear gets stepped on, I forgive.  When people forget to fill my empty water bowl, I bark and then I forgive.  Let go of anger and resentments.  Free yourself from negative energy by forgiving and moving on.  There is always time for a nap.

 

Make time for fun and relaxation.

1.     Set aside relaxation time.  Stress reduction techniques should always include relaxation.  Include rest and relaxation in your daily schedule—two naps are a minimum.  Don’t allow other obligations to encroach. This is your time to take a break from all responsibilities and recharge your batteries.  Life can be stressful, living with other less organized individuals sharing your space and trying to maintain a schedule for regular meal times.  Separate your stressful situations with time for relaxing and rejuvenating rest.

2.     Do something you enjoy every day. Make time for leisure activities that bring you joy, whether it is exercising out of doors, playing with others or enjoying a nice bone. Life is too short to fill up your days with stress.

How to Fix Run time Error 339

What is It?

When PC programs launch, they begin a phase known as its “runtime.” This begins when the program starts and ends with its termination. Program errors that occur during the runtime are known as runtime errors – and Runtime Error 339 is one of the most common. For the most part, error 339 won’t cause the entire program or operating system to crash, but it truly is a royal nuisance.

Do I Need to Fix It?

Yes, for several reasons. First off, Runtime Errors can be malicious and cause major malfunction within your PC, risking your data and other programs.

Secondly, because the error is located within the very complicated Windows Registry, it can spread and cause other errors in the registry – further compounding your problem.

Finally, even if the Runtime Error happens to be minor, let’s face it – they’re a royal pain. They constantly pop-up at inconvenient times, and generally slow down your PC.

Runtime Error 339

When the runtime error 339 path/file access message appears, it is telling you that the software could not access a needed file or that it does not have appropriate rights to it. Runtime error 339 is common on networks where files are often shared, different computers have different network privileges, or something (such as a firewall) blocks access. Read-only files and files in use can also cause it.

Fixing Runtime Error 339

Fixing runtime error 339 involves identifying which file is being blocked and where it is located and then changing the settings so that your program can access it properly. The error itself will likely provide you with this information. Once you identify the file, find it by using Windows Explorer (right-click the Start button and click Explore). Right-click the file in question, choose Properties, and make sure that it is not set to “read only.”

From there, click on the Security tab to see if you are listed as a user. Double-check your permissions to make sure that you have at least read and execute privileges.

By editing these settings, you can change that. You can also right-click a program and choose Run as Administrator before launching it which allows you to run it with the appropriate permissions without having to log on to the computer as the Administrator (assuming you have access to the Administrator account).

As with most Windows runtime errors, however, they are usually indicative of a larger registry problem within your Windows operating system. If runtime error 339 is occurring, it’s more than likely other errors will follow. Your best course of action is to use a registry cleaner to permanently solve the error, and all other forthcoming errors.

Is it Time for a Tune Up?

Have you checked your authenticity, aliveness and connection meter lately?

Some years ago when I first started coaching, my passion was just that – authenticity, aliveness and connection. That’s what I wanted for everyone. I still do.

I had seen many of my friends trading the precious hours of their lives for a paycheck doing work – or in a system – that crushed their individuality and dulled their senses.

While I was a stress management consultant and trainer, I was surprised and saddened as I heard over and over again how many people hated their jobs. They lived for Friday afternoon from the time they came to work on Monday morning. They were trading 5 days of their life every week for the security of a paycheck and benefits, and believed they had no other choice.

In every workshop or training I delivered, one or more of the participants would be inspired at some point during the day, reconnect with a dream, and share it. Their dream often involved an innate gift or talent of theirs. Some would sing. In one workshop, a man even sang an aria after lunch.

Sometimes, I invited participants to speak for 5 minutes on something they were passionate about. At first, they were reluctant and timid to speak in front of the group, until they began to speak the truth of their passion.

During this 5 minutes, they were transformed. Their faces came alive and their eyes lit up. Once they began speaking, the attention of everyone in the room was riveted on them.

That is the impact of authenticity, aliveness and connection.

It is the kind of impact that authenticity, feeling fully alive and being connected has on you and the people around you. It is your natural magnetism and it is what you must keep alive to thrive in your business, and to stand out naturally so that your ideal clients can find you.

For some entrepreneurs, their businesses become deadening jobs. Some are holding themselves back from the life-changing business in their hearts. And others are barely making ends meet.

They have lost touch with the passion that brought them to owning their own business. They are not expressing the gifts that they were born to let shine in the world. And they are trying to serve clients that are not ideal for them.

Don’t let this happen to you. And if it has, start doing something different today!

Here are three ways to turn up your dial of authenticity, aliveness and connection:

1. Reconnect with the passion that brought you into business. What is it?

2. Get clear about the gift you must express consistently in your life and in your business to feel fully alive. This will probably be the gift that will cause the greatest growth in you and your business. What action will you take in the next 24 hours to get that gift out in the world?

How to take controle of your stress

Stress is usually triggered by events that occurs in our daily lives and the way we react to those situations. The reason why we as humans develop stress is for the simple reason that our body is busy getting us ready and preparing us for a difficult situation we are going to face and it gets us to focus, build our strength, endurance and increased vigilance.
The so called event that triggers our stress are called stressors, and it covers a wide spectrum – all this is to protect us against direct physical damage and it shows us ways how to overcome a situation or take a half value of its most difficult issue.

Stress, how will it affect you and make you respond.

We also develop stress without a obvious threat to our survival, this we usually find in our work environment. Most things should work overload, conflicting priorities, inconsistent values, too demanding deadlines, conflicts with colleagues, uncomfortable environments, and so on. Not only does it reduce our work performance and makes us mentally very tired but it also causes discomfort between you and your colleges, which usually ends up in a fight and may end up in you losing your job and make you feel like scum.
What is the effect of acute stress?

The best way to understand it is if I can make you imagine a dangerous animal is attacking you and try to think what response your brain will have to make you manage this stress.
Your brain will usually respond in the best manner possible and it will give you a big boost of adrenalin and this might save you from the beast or just let you get away with minor bruises.
These secret amounts of steroid hormones or adrenilin as we call it triggers the system and it will instantly start to manufacture  vast amounts steroid hormones, the primary production is called cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol is very important in being the policeman of our systems throughout the body (including the heart, lungs, circulation, metabolism, immune system and skin) to protect itself from any threat.

Release of catecholamines. The adrenalin system also releases certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) called catecholamines, in particular, is known as dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (also called adrenaline).

Lastly?

You can learn how to protect yourself in stressful situations and protect yourself in stressful situations so you won’t become a victim of crime, your work.
