The rat race that is modern society means that Monday to Friday the vast majority of us are so busy that come the weekend we’re all frazzled and exhausted. By the time Sunday evening rolls around our downtime has passed in the blink of an eye. We have forty-eight hours away from the office. The last thing we feel like doing with that time for ourselves is write a grocery list, let alone try to organize our entire households.

The irony is that for many of us, a large part of why it’s so difficult to balance all that we have to accomplish during the week is due precisely to the complete lack of organization in our lives. It may seem like a lot to take on, but once you have figured out how to organize your life it becomes a lot easier to do all the things you need to do and a lot less stressful too!

Organization in your home will ultimately lead to organization in your life. You may not realize it but the physical mess and disorganization in your life can really affect you mentally. It’s as if our physical environments act as mirrors for what’s going on in our minds and vice versa. Thus, making time to take control of your physical space and bring order to the chaos will have positive repercussions mentally.

So dive in. Make a list of what needs to be done, room by room. Prioritize the list and do the toughest or most important jobs first. Create categories for items and make separate piles for each, then decide how to organize and store each pile. Make sure you have garbage bags, a shredder, and storage containers with you in each room as you go. Most importantly, don’t try to tackle the mess alone – ask for help. And don’t worry about getting it all done at once, in fact take a few weekends or so to keep yourself from burning out and you may just have a good time getting organized.

Being Nice Doesn’t Hurt

I’ve just been wondering something lately.  Why are people, for the most part, so rude and inconsiderate?  Why does the average person seem to only care about him or herself – as though this is THEIR world and everyone else is put here merely to serve them?

People fly off the handle to restaurant staff, store clerks, bank tellers, and so on. If they’re the least bit inconvenienced, the fangs come out and the air turns blue.  What’s up with that?  You have to wait 10 minutes for a table – is it really worth making a complete ass of yourself?  If your time is so much more precious than everyone else’s, why not be civil? Kindly inform the workers that you know they’re busy and that you can see they’re working hard.  Ask them if there’s any indication that a table will be ready for you anytime soon.  If not, take thyself to the next restaurant!


If a cashier makes a mistake, why not point it out with a smile?  Why not be civil about it rather than being a jerk? She/he isn’t out for you, they’re simply human and made a human error.

If your webmaster or webmistress linked a word to the wrong page, why not simply point it out?  Why rant, belittle, and nominate yourself for jerk of the year?  Simply point out that there’s a little goof and ask if they can fix it when they get a chance?

If your son doesn’t put the hammer exactly where you want it, why not say something like, “Buddy, dad (or mom) tends to get busy and have a tough time keeping up with things. 

For one thing, only jerks use “never” and “always” in disagreements. Oh, and first graders.

Secondly, why rattle someone’s cage or push their buttons? If you want them to help you, make life easier for you, or do something for you (which is what you’re after in the first place), doesn’t it make more sense to have them on your side?!?!  You want them to respect you and you certainly want them to like you.  If they disrespect you or think of you as a rude jerk, honestly, how much effort do you think they’re ever going to put into putting and keeping a smile on your face?

It’s the start of a new week. It’s the perfect time to think about how you act and react to people when you’re inconvenienced, annoyed, or disappointed. If you know you’re a ranting, finger-pointing, nightmare for everyone in public and private, ask yourself why you think you’re this way.  For example, is it what you grew up with?  Or were you in the military, where screaming was the norm for flawed situations?

Irregardless of WHY you tend to overreact now, realize that you do.  Also, realize that the people you treat like this don’t deserve it.   What’s more, YOU don’t deserve it. YOU deserve to be respected and loved by all and if you’re being a jerk, it’s just not going to happen.  The next time you feel like someone hasn’t done enough for you (or they weren’t quick enough, or they didn’t do exactly what you wanted…), catch yourself. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re, literally, having a temper tantrum and looking like a perfect fool.

It’s just not a good look for anyone.

Not long ago, I read an interview with Dick Van Dyke.  (Love him!)  He said that he wasn’t a fan of reality television because he didn’t think it had a good effect on society.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I love quite a few reality tv shows, but I can see where he’s coming from.  Think about it, few people on reality television shows act like you’d want anyone in your family acting like.  Most of the time, they’re very selfish and incredibly greedy.

Ironically enough, Survivor just wrapped up and the winner just so happened to have lied to a guy who was supposed to be his close friend.  Yes, that’s part of territory.  My biggest problems with him were the fact that he used a very impressionable teenage girl and completely pulled her strings.  He did the same with two other very young girls.  I’m sorry if I’m overreacting to it all – and I apologize if you disagree with me.  However, I’m a mother of three daughters which gives me a great amount of compassion and concern for young girls. I go off the deep end many times when it comes to young people and animals. Have you noticed?!

It was just uncomfortable to watch at times.

At several points, an unpredictable, volatile man would be screaming at these young girls.  This “winner” never intervened, never stepped in, and never came to the girls’ defense.  There wasn’t anything in it for him.

He not only won the title of Sole Survivor. He was voted fan favorite as well.

Mr. Van Dyke makes a stellar case.  And this is one of the more “reasonable” and socially conscious reality shows.

Okay, grumbling over.  Back to the real world.  It matters how you treat people, and I know you know that.  The problem is, when we’re annoyed or inconvenienced, that goes right out the window.  Yet it shouldn’t – after all, that’s the time people are watching you the most!

Let kindness, understanding, and patience work for you – they’ll do more for your cause than immaturity, yelling, sulking, or name-calling ever will.

The Power of “Yet”

When I had a heart attack a little over five years ago, I asked, “Why?”

And my doctor told me that I had a high level of a rare form of cholesterol that sticks to itself and to artery walls like Velcro, making me three times more liable to have a heart attack than the average person. Furthermore, my doctor told me there was no medication, diet, or exercise – nothing I could do – that would lower this level. I felt nothing but despair. It sounded like a death sentence to me.

Nothing I could do? I fired the doctor. And found a new one. The new one said, “We don’t have a solution for that…yet.” What healing those three little letters brought to me! They suggested that my doctor believed:
– Someone somewhere in the world was working on this problem;
– There would be a solution…sometime;


– She would be aware of that solution because she believed it was possible; and
– She would pass that solution on to me.

Never really got calculus.

Until then, anything is possible, but we will never know it if we are not open to the possibilities. For good ideas are like birds carrying good news, circling excitedly for a place to land, then flying away disappointed at the lack of a landing field.
Keeping your eyes open to possibilities only works if you have hope in your heart. As the song says, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

The problem is not that we are depressed, anxious, angry, or in conflict.
This is normal, a part of life.

The problem is that our focus is off and we are stuck repeating painful or damaging thoughts, feelings, desires, and behaviors that hurt us and others. Life may feel overwhelming as we try to avoid or control things that keep coming back to haunt us. When we are in conflict, uncertain about our next move, we often feel paralyzed. Or we jump the track and act crazy. We make unhelpful new choices or repeat hurtful old ones. We are stuck and that’s the problem.
We get stuck because we fail to stay aware of what’s really going on. Our powerful subconscious mind takes over and our thinking becomes lopsided. We cannot see the whole truth of the situation and we lack hope and compassion for ourselves and others. Instead, our subconscious mind stirs up instincts and habits that force us to see ourselves, others, and the world in painful, but familiar ways. Often we don’t even realize how mean and ugly our focus is, or how hurt and angry our focus makes us feel. We are stuck on auto-pilot and our subconscious mind, not our conscious mind is running our show.

2 Keys to Freedom
We can find freedom if we stay conscious and off auto-pilot. Here are two keys to help us. The first key is to stay aware of where we focus, what we feel, how we react. Of course that’s not true, but most people carry around more than their share of stress, and this eventually leads them to die sooner than they normally would. That’s why I’ve identified these 7 habits for you to better manage your stress now instead of dying from it later. It’s time to give your stress the easy treatment!

Habit # 1 – “Law of 21”

If you follow through with a new mindset for 21 days in a row it will begin to become a habit. That’s right-if you exercise, read, get up early, take vitamins, drink water, etc. for 21 consecutive days, your body and mind will become so accustomed to that behavior it will begin to accept it as a natural habit. That’s when relaxing can become as easy as breathing.

Habit # 2 – “Re-learn to breathe”

Somewhere along the road of higher education, some students forget how to breathe properly. Most people don’t even realize that they generally take quick, shallow breaths until they are so low on air they gasp in an overflow of oxygen. Because you are depriving it of oxygen, this type of breathing forces your brain to work on minimal fuel until the inevitable gush of gasped air comes rushing through.

You must practice these four steps of quiet and focused deep breathing to get your body and mind out of the stress jungle and back into balance:

1) Find a calm place, close your eyes, push all the air into your lungs and out through your mouth. Then focus on fully inhaling through your nose, expanding your belly first and then completely filling your lungs, shoulders pushed back and chest puffed out.

2) As you come to the end of your inhale, pause for about three seconds and feel the fullness of the oxygen in your body. Remember to keep your eyes closed.

3) Don’t “huff-out” the exhale! In a relaxed jaw “hoooooo” position in a controlled manor, gently exhale the air in your lungs through your mouth and keep exhaling until you feel your stomach pull all the way in.Then slowly open your eyes.


4) Repeat this process three to four times. Stop if you begin to feel light headed. This deep-breathing technique will help you to regain your mind/body balance in most any stressful time or situation.

Habit # 3 – “Life isn’t fair…so stop being surprised when it’s not”

It doesn’t matter how privileged or lucky someone else may seem. Everyone pays their “worldly” dues in their own way. It may be hard at times to see past the glaring physical, intellectual or economic advantages that some individuals possess. However, to keep your stress level down remember that every seemingly fortunate person you encounter will eventually have to pay their own “life dues.” Nobody gets away clean! But until that time comes, life isn’t fair. Know that your time is coming soon, and, meanwhile, do the best with what you’ve got.

Habit # 4 – “Get off the radar”

Every so often, intentionally get off your “Life Radar” by leaving your cell phone, computer, watch, and iWhatever at home while you go to a park, see a movie by yourself, visit a bookstore, walk through a museum or catch a sporting event by yourself. Don’t tell anyone where you’re going or how long you’ll be gone. Just go and be by yourself with no distractions, to-do lists or no time-limits. Even if you don’t realize that you have lost your connection, leaving the radar for a bit will rejuvenate you and allow you to re-connect with the big picture.

Habit # 5 – “Choose your battles wisely”

Don’t fight the world. You’ll never win. You’ll never please or beat everyone. Pick your battles and decide which ones are worth your valuable time and energy. Realize that your time and energy are your most precious assets. Do you really want to give them away to every jerk you encounter or any annoyancethat pops up? Letting a “battle” go without a fight is weakness, but rather strength. How truly strong and smart is the person who spends his time yelling and pushing against every force of life, just to eventually turn around and notice how incredibly far behind he’s fallen? It’s sad to realize after spending so much energy fighting something that it’s possible to fall behind someone who simply walked past the battle at the get-go. Don’t let that happen to you. Just let it go.

Habit # 6 – “Stop calling 911 on your life”

Your life isn’t an emergency. No matter how many responsibilities you have or how many tasks you have to get done, life would go on without you for everyone else if you were to die in your sleep tonight. You and your trials and tribulations are not 100% critical to anyone but you. So ease up on yourself. Remember the age-old advice that in 100 years there will be an entirely new set of people on this planet. So why fret so much about what you’re doing now? In a mere 100 years even the greatest achievements of today will be stepping stones to a whole new crop of people.

Habit # 7 – “Choose kindness over self-righteousness”

You can spend your entire life insisting your opinion is the right one, but no one will like you. The more you push your need to be right corresponds to the level of compassion other people won’t have for you. Your opinion on a given issue is just one of many unique opinions. Your opinion is not right or wrong…it’s simply yours, just like everyone else’s opinion. You will be unhappy, stressed-out, and lonely if you can’t accept other people’s opinions along with your own.!
