Have you seen it around lately? It is something that affects us all that is stress. It is estimated that one of ten people you see at work, at the store, and wherever you go in your daily life is touched by the effects of stress. Letting Go Of Emotional Stress

During life, we may encounter periods of time where we are under a lot of stress. We tend to hold onto these moments and carry them forward with us. How we felt during that period is also carried forward if we do not let go of it. That is why, even though the moment we are in may seem good, easy, and enjoyable, we may still feel anxious, unsure, and troubled. Letting go of what happened to us, as well as how we felt, is very important in order to feel at ease and confident with where we are.

The trouble with overlooking our previous emotional state is that we have soaked up a lot of anxiety, fear, and emotional tension, so when that stressful moment passes, we need to let go of the emotions we have experienced. Otherwise, we will tend to re-experience this tension emotionally, in new and different ways. What this means is, although the stressful moment has passed, we will keep experiencing how we felt, regardless of the present moment. We can hold onto this emotional tension for very long time.

Once we become aware that the tension of a previous moment is residing with us, we need to acknowledge what we went through, how it made us feel, and accept it. We need to be present with how we felt and how we can now feel, since the stress is alleviated. Then we need to remind ourselves that we can now let go of the tension. We can release the stress physically, emotionally, and mentally now that the moment has passed. Of course, we can do this during the course of the event, but, as a complete cleanse, we need to do it afterward as well. Look at it as releasing the tension with the intent of no longer holding onto its effects.

Sometimes, we like to carry the way something felt for a long time as a reminder, a personal triumph, or so that we can reconnect to it. This does us no good. Nothing can or will be gained by physically holding onto our past in this way. What was is over, gone, and no longer a part of us. The only moment we can truly experience is now and nothing else. Releasing the tension in our bodies, hearts, and minds frees us up to be where we are now.

Take the time after a stressful moment to intentionally release the experience. Let it go from your body, mind, and heart. Release how it made you feel, think, and behave. When we want to be free of tension or stress in our lives, we need to do this. It opens you up to the moment you are in and releases old emotions and thoughts. There is no need to carry forward with us an experience that troubled us, hurt us, or overwhelmed us in any way. We can release anything we choose too by pure intention alone; it is nothing more than that. With awareness and intention, we can be free from experiencing stress continuously and emotionally.

Just Breathing

Pause, breathe, choose: I remind my clients (and myself) of this sequence frequently, adding that the response we make to a stressful event is our choice, not a given.

To reach the point where we recognize other choices, it is important to be able to distance ourselves from the world and center on our own bodies and minds. Correct breathing is the key here. If you have ever studied voice or a wind instrument, you probably know how to do this already.

If not, here’s a primer: deep breathing doesn’t come from the chest, but from the abdomen. Therefore, the best way to start taking a deep, relaxed breath is to let go of all the muscles you have probably been trying so hard to hold in. Feel the entire front of your body release; if you are sitting down and are not skeleton-thin, you may feel a portion of your lower abdomen touch the very tops of your thighs.


At the moment that this happens, think of your body filling with air, and picture that air reaching all the way down into the bottom of your abdomen. At the same time, you will probably become aware that your entire rib cage is expanding to the side as well as to the front.

Once you have grasped this technique, try the following sequence:
– Inhale for four slow counts
– Exhale for four slow counts
– Stay empty for four slow counts

Your body contains enough oxygen for you to rest comfortably for four slow counts without feeling the slightest bit deprived, yet somehow in this state it is difficult if not impossible to think of anything except your body, especially the center of your body which is involved with breathing. Your consciousness pulls in until the outer world recedes, and you are all alone, comfortably, with yourself. The squirrel wheel of your mind even stops.

Repeat this exercise several times. If you do it for ten minutes, you are taking giant steps towards maintaining physical and mental health, for it not only slows down your thinking but also slows down your nervous system and your heart rate.

In this state, unimportant events somehow slip away. You may find they are replaced by truly creative thoughts about how to plan your next moves.

Once you have learned this technique, you can practice it anywhere. Just a deep breath or two can help you handle a difficult situation with less stress.

Relaxation Tips to Minimize Stress

Recent studies have shown that stress can have an adverse affect on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional states. It’s just not as easy to be your best when you’re constantly saddled with problems, concerns, worries, and the like. Just like a machine, the human body needs to be in optimum condition in order to function at top efficiency.

Imagine yourself after a hard day’s work at the office. As much as you’d like to leave everything behind once you leave the office, most of the time the day’s worries stick with you. Unsolved problems, looming deadlines — these can all be quite difficult to shake off. Now once at home, you find yourself unable to fully unwind. You can’t play with your children or help them with their homework because you’re too tired. You can’t relax with your spouse because you have too many things on your mind. 

Certainly, such a scenario makes life much more difficult. As much as you’d like to be a fun parent or a cool spouse, you have none of the physical or emotional energy to do so. In the end, you end up a seriously dejected shell of the person you once were. Definitely not the future you want for yourself, right?

Another option is to brew yourself a cup of tea and relax in bed. This could be great for weekend afternoons. Stay in bed, keep warm, and don’t worry about anything at all. Wonderful teas like chamomile work wonders in keeping you calm and happy. 

If it’s the house (and the kids) that’s getting you too wound up, go for a short trip. You can look for nature’s scenic spots and have a group retreat. Of course, you could go on a solo trip, but if you fancy a bit of company, a group retreat is best. It’s a short but definitely relaxing trip. Most trips consist of looking for hotels and wandering through the streets for shopping. A group retreat, though, means you get to relax and enjoy the wonders of nature. Definitely a far cry from your everyday life.  Try a group retreat with a few close friends or your spouse.

Other options to minimize stress include making a few changes in your habits at home. One thing to remember is to not bring your work home. Keep the job in the office. Worrying really isn’t healthy, so curb the habit! 

Go for a quick jog or a nice brisk walk around your home before you turn in. By then, all your worries from work will have evaporated. It’s important that you draw boundaries, no matter how difficult it may seem. 

Finally, think happy thoughts! Don’t let the negative stuff take over. Focus on the positive, and the day just gets a little brighter.
