New museum of contemporary art opens within listed building in Trondheim, Norway New museum of contemporary art opens within listed building in Trondheim, Norway
A new museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art has just opened within a Grade I Listed Building in Norway’s Trondheim: PoMo.
Located within a four-storey Art Nouveau building that once served as the city’s main post office, PoMo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is at the heart of the city’s cultural district, with other institutions such as the Kunsthall Trondheim, Literature House, Trondheim Kunstmuseum and National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design all within a five-minute walk.
Through its permanent collection, PoMo aims to address gender inequality found across the wider art world, with a minimum of 60% of its acquisitions budget dedicated to female artists.
Artists on show now include Louise Bourgeois, James Lee Byars, Katharina Fritsch, Anne Imhof, Cui Jie, Simone Leigh, Sol LeWitt, Sandra Mujinga, Philippe Parreno, Ugo Rondinone, Andra Ursuţa and Franz West.

Alongside the permanent collection, there will be two temporary exhibitions each year. The first, Postcard From The Future, will feature around 100 artworks from 24 international artists, many of whom have never had works displayed in Trondheim, or Norway as a whole.
Spanning paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations, the works explore topics including iconography, identity, nature and urbanity as well as global interconnectedness.
Marit Album Kvernmo, Director of PoMo, said, “One guiding principle in our artistic programme is to join contemporary art with more historic modernist works and artists. For example, a fine example of this in our opening exhibition is the conversation we are creating between the contemporary German artist Anne Imhof and the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
“In our future programme, we aim to contextualise relevant themes in our world in 2025 through our artistic proposition. We believe that art creates a platform for discussion between people, breaking down barriers and addressing the polarisation of our societies.”
Entrance for adults is 180 NOK (£13), while children up to the age of 19 can enter for free. Those under the age of 25, or those with a student ID, can enter for 120 NOK (£8.50).
